White-cheeked Green Barbet

This is one of the many barbets residing around my office. Shot in the morning with a very overcast sky, hence the grainy pic. This one's just for the records.

Greater Spotted Eagle with kill

These images are from the same Jan series of the Greater Spotted Eagle. As we entered our regular shooting area, we noticed this eagle being harassed by a lot of kites. On closer inspection we found the Eagle siting with a snake that it had just killed. My friend Vinay and I were fortunate enough to make quite a few images.

Being continuously harassed by the kites, the eagle took-off in search of a more peaceful spot.

Followed the eagle flying till it perched a little distance away and made a few more images.

All images shot with Canon EOS 40D + Sigma 50-500mm courtesy Vinay & Rajesh respectively.

Portrait of a Pond Heron

Another of the old images that i happened to find lying on my comp.

Pond Heron
Canon EOS 40D + The Canon EF 500mm f/4.0 L IS USM

One of the most commonly found birds in and around the City, I found the color of this Pond Heron to be quite different when compared to most of them. A lot more 'whiter' as compared to the common pale-brown coloration.

Camera & Lens borrowed from my friend Vinay L for this shot.

Tawny Eagle

Another post of the same Tawny Eagle that i had posted earlier, this image was shot from under the car, yes UNDER THE CAR! :)

Tawny Eagle
Canon EOS 20D + Sigma 135-400mm
Location: Bangalore, India

A little info about the Tawny Eagle from Wiki:
Length: 62–72 cm
Wingspan: 165–185 cm
Weight: 1.6–2.4 kg
The Tawny Eagle's diet is largely fresh carrion of all kinds, but it will kill small mammals up to the size of a rabbit, reptiles and birds up to the size of guineafowl. It will also steal food from other raptors.
The call of the Tawny Eagle is a crow-like barking, but it is rather a silent bird except in display.

Tawny Eagle!!

P.S. I had wrongly quoted the bird as 'Steppe Eagle' earlier. After some debate over the ID by some experts, it was identified as the 'Tawny Eagle'

Finally managed to get the Tawny Eagle(the first time being more of record shots on my first visit to this water-body). Made a few images. More to follow soon.

All images shot handheld and manually focused with: Canon EOS 20D + Sigma 135-400mm

Thanks for viewing. :)

Common Kestrel - Ground Level shots

After a month or two of trying, i finally managed to get myself the shot i wanted of this bird, the 'ground level shot' and believe me it isn't easy crawling on that rugged terrain. Both these images were shot with a Sigma 135-400mm DG APO(hand-held & manually focused) mounted on a Canon EOS 350D(borrowed from my friend Piyush). The other day i met a photographer in another vehicle who was shooting next to our vehicle, and said i got better images than him, as i had used the Canon 1D MkII, this is my reply to him, i have used one of the basic cameras here, and hand-held and manually-focused!

Tiger Tales - Bandipur - 12th to 14th Jan, 2010

and GOD said 'Happy Birthday Angad'

13th January, 2010
I was told to come to the safari booking counter at 6AM, reached on time. I guess it was way to early, as there wasn't a soul around, it was pitch dark and freezing. Around 6:45AM there was a little light, but unfortunately no tourists, because of which the guy at the counter informed me that the bus safari may be canceled. He told me that he'l try and request the driver of one of the lodge jeeps to take me along. Fortunately for me, the gypsy that arrived had two of India's well know wildlife photographers Giri Cavale & Jayanth Sharma. The driver agreed to take me along for a small fee. During the safari, the driver suddenly said 'sir chirthe', chirthe the local word for leopard. It was a huge male crossing the safari trail at quite some distance. As we neared it, it vanished into the bushes, my FIRST B'DAY GIFT!! :) Jayanth also informed me that it was his first leopard sighting in Bandipur. Sadly couldn't make any images. Just one showing the spots, which i wont be uploading!
In the evening i along with a new found friend(Archana) tried our luck with getting ourselves in the same gypsy, but this time there was a different driver who asked for a VERY high amount. Politely refusing this offer we decided to take the bus safari, which only cost Rs. 35/-. A few minutes into the safari, and we saw a tiger disappearing into the bushes. My first tiger sighting. SECOND B'DAY GIFT! :D We waited patiently at a nearby waterhole for about 10-15min(for which i must thank the driver & the other tourists, who unlike the regular tourists sat very quietly). Our patience paid off, the tiger appeared on the other side of the waterhole. Even though at a distance, the tiger posed well, giving us a very nice sighting of 15 mins. Managed to make a few images. I was glad that I had taken my friend Rajesh's Sigma 50-500mm and left behind my Sigma 135-400mm, the extra 100mm did make a lot of difference.
At night there was another surprising leopard sighting just behind the guest house area, close to the dining hall, where while sitting outside the dining area chatting with the cook, we saw a leopard charge at the spotted deer group that usually congregate around during evening/night time near the guest house are. The leopard missed the deer and quickly disappeared back into the forest.
I couldn't have had a more exiting birthday, my first leopard & tiger sighting on the same day!

A brief summary of my birthday:
Morning: Leopard
Evening: Tiger
Night: Leopard
:D

All images shot handheld & auto focused with a Canon EOS 40D & Sigma 50-500mm in AV mode.

2009 ends on a good note! :)

Firstly Happy New year to you and your family! :) hope you all had a blast.

In this post i will combine two trips made on the 25th & the 30th of December, 2009. Both were to Hessarghatta lake. Again a lot of common species.

25th December, 2009
Headed to Hessarghatta pretty late with my friend Rahul, who's in town for a short visit. Was testing my friends Sigma 170-500mm on the 1-D MkII. The AF was pretty good, but nowhere close to a L-lens. I did however prefer the Manual Focus on a few occasions, where in AF mode, the lens began to hunt a lot.

30th December, 2009
Made my third trip to this place with Piyush on a two-wheeler. Take my word, 2-wheelers arent the best option for birding, they tend to scare away a lot of birds! :P
All images shot with Sigma 135-400mm DG APO (hand-held & manually focused)

Pariah Kite

Paddyfield Pipit

Brahminy Kite

Hopefully this year, i manage to add many more species to my list. Hope you all enjoyed the pics. :)
