The bug knows where to HIDE! - Indian Roller

Here is an image that i made sometime ago of an Indian Roller, since I was using my 600mm I was quite far away from the bird and did not notice anything unusual. Only on getting back home and reviewing the image on my monitor did I realize that there was a tiny bug under the rollers beak, hence making me give the post its name 'The bug knows where to HIDE'.

You will find more info about Indian Rollers in my OLDER POST.

State Bird of Karnataka - Indian Roller

Indian Roller Coracias benghalensis
This lovely bird below is the Indian Roller. It also happens to be the state bird of Karnataka. The Indian Roller gets its name because of the 'rolling' display of the male during breeding season. They have a huge variety when it comes to prey ranging from small insects such as crickets , grasshoppers, bees, etc and larger prey such as lizards, scorpions, mice, etc.

There has been a recent development at the grassland where these images have been photographed and if action is not taken, we may see the end of this particular habitat of theirs!! At first, the government planted saplings over here(half of which have already died), did they not realize the meaning of the term 'grassland', who plants a huge number of tree saplings in a grassland, and now the great minds at work here want to build a theme park or a film city at this very grassland. It is time THE SYSTEM changes, let us take a stand against this stupidity!!

Indian Roller

Indian Roller, Coracias benghalensis:
While quite a common and colorful bird, not many people know that the Indian Roller is also the State Bird of Karnataka. It was formerly called Blue Jay. They are usually seen perched on trees and electric wires along roads and also in open grasslands. It is a 26-27cm stocky bird. They mainly feed on insects such as beetles, grasshoppers and crickets.
The Indian Roller is easily distinguished from the migratory European Roller, the former has a brown breast while the latter has a blue breast.

2009 ends on a good note! :)

Firstly Happy New year to you and your family! :) hope you all had a blast.

In this post i will combine two trips made on the 25th & the 30th of December, 2009. Both were to Hessarghatta lake. Again a lot of common species.

25th December, 2009
Headed to Hessarghatta pretty late with my friend Rahul, who's in town for a short visit. Was testing my friends Sigma 170-500mm on the 1-D MkII. The AF was pretty good, but nowhere close to a L-lens. I did however prefer the Manual Focus on a few occasions, where in AF mode, the lens began to hunt a lot.

30th December, 2009
Made my third trip to this place with Piyush on a two-wheeler. Take my word, 2-wheelers arent the best option for birding, they tend to scare away a lot of birds! :P
All images shot with Sigma 135-400mm DG APO (hand-held & manually focused)

Hopefully this year, i manage to add many more species to my list. Hope you all enjoyed the pics. :)
